Hunt the whole river valley, with most stags taken along the grassy meadows beside the crystal clear blue flowing river or in the pine forest through the valley. Higher up are lush mountain meadows where stags can be abundant. Over the years, Wilderness Quest has stocked the valley with superior genetics, and offers some of the biggest wild red stags in New Zealand, ranging from 250 – 310 SCI.
Fallow deer graze on the top edge of the timberline and the edge of scrub line, and are found in the open grass terraces as much as in the dense scrub. The Fallow Buck is a very timid and wary animal, making this type of hunting very challenging. Wilderness Quest offers Fallow as a preserve hunt, with a large selection of bucks.
The Arapawa ram is mostly dark brown and black with white markings, with an average ram having 1 to 1½ curls on each side. A ram with double curls is considered exceptional, however this won't always guarantee length. Some heavy single curls can also carry good length. These trophy animals can be hunted on Wilderness Quest's preserve, or along the wild river flats.
Trophy feral billies can be hard to find and a hunt can be an exciting addition to your hunting experience. Hunts for these trophy animals occur on Wilderness Quest's Haupiri Valley estate.
Wild boars are commonly hunted with trained dogs, which is exciting and often dangerous, as the boars are unpredictable. Wilderness Quest also offers the spot and stalk method, as they have excellent properties which have numerous boars. The boars are available on their preserve in the Haupiri valley, and can be hunted all year round.
